Hailing from various parts of the globe, London-based four-piece Kurran And The Wolfnotes bring an unmistakable noughties twist to the alt-folk sound, with a playful hint of The Strokes complimenting their folk sensibilities.
Having already released singles "Whatabitch" and "Your Four Limbs", both via Chess Club Records, Kurran et al have just finished recording their debut album, working with producer Richard Causon (who has worked with the likes of Ryan Adams, Rufus Wainwright and Kings of Leon).
We caught up with Kurran and Tim from the band to find out more.
How did you all meet and get together as a band?
Tim: We all met through friends over the last few years. Kurran had all these songs and it all started to sound really good so it kind of just became what it is now.
How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard your music before?
Tim: It's kind of a mix of alternative surf, folk rock. Yeah, I just made that up...
Who are your influences, and do they differ within the band?
Tim: We all come from completely different musical backgrounds so we could come up with quite the list!
What have you been listening to recently?
Tim: Loads. We're constantly listening to music. Just a few though: Warpaint, Bowerbirds, Avi Buffalo, Bad Books.
You’re just finishing putting together your debut album, how was the recording process?
Kurran: Strenuous. We were never really very happy with any of our previous recordings so we decided to take a much more organic approach to recording the album. We'd play through which ever song we were going to be recording that day til about 6. By that point we'd all want to kill each other over the new alterations to the songs so we'd go out get some dinner and beers, maybe a cheeky spliff, then record the song 3 or 4 times and the best take is the record.
What can we expect from the album, does it differ from the singles you’ve put out?
It's nowhere near as polished as the singles were. We did record the singles for the album, but we're still not sure which ones will make the album.
You spent a lot of time touring last year, any favourite moments?
The whole Lightspeed Champion tour was sick.
Do you have plans to tour this year? Any festivals?
Yeah, we're going to tour around April and then we'll be playing Latitude, Beach Break and whatever else we get offered.
What are your ambitions for your music?
That it doesnt suck, anything after that is a bonus.
