tonight I am doing some Popjustice Twenty Quid Music Prize judging, here's the shortlist out of which I will OBVIOUSLY be fighting the corner for Nicola Roberts, obviously, as Beat Of My Drum deserves to win...
saying that I do really really like Somebody To Love Me, and Finish Line.
Here are all of the songs minus two in a playlist
Adele – ‘Rolling In The Deep’
Hurts – ‘Stay’
Jessie J – ‘Do It Like A Dude’
Joe McElderry – ‘Ambitions’
Mark Ronson & The Business Intl feat Boy George etc – ‘Somebody To Love Me’
Nadia Oh – ‘Taking Over The Dancefloor’
Nicola Roberts – ‘Beat Of My Drum’
The Saturdays – ‘Higher’
Sunday Girl – ‘Stop Hey’
Take That – ‘The Flood’
The Wanted – ‘All Time Low’
Yasmin – ‘Finish Line’

CYOA! Part 9: Atlantis
heading to cyoa part 9 for some underwater love...
In a single day and night back in 300BC the island of Atlantis was overwhelmed beneath the waves and suddenly disappeared after a mysterious earthquake struck. For thousands of years the lost city’s location has remained unknown….until now! CYOA has uncovered fresh scientific evidence of its whereabouts and now you have the chance to sign up as one of Team CYOA’s intrepid partyographers on our latest expedition.
Venture beneath the surface with the Readers Wifes, Kevy Petting and Kostakis to dance with the deep sea creatures and long lost Atlanteans.
Then plunge a few thousand leagues deeper into the basement where the one and only Boy 8-Bit will take you on an aquatic underworld voyage. The Flinkmapingo gang of SlothBoogie, Sharkleberry Fin and Lou Madhu will also be providing some water bass power.
A lot of people attack the sea, we make love to it. It’s Choose Your Own Adventure!

Sonisphere 2011
Last weekend saw the third year of Sonisphere in the UK, and it’s first outing as a three-day event. It also boasted the ‘Big Four’ of thrash metal, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth (insert metal roar here).
After arriving on site and having a 20 minute walk to the guest campsite (no shuttle bus this year), I rushed on over to watch grunge revivalists Japanese Voyeurs. I bloody love grunge and having already watched this band at my first metal festival of the year a month ago, I couldn’t wait to see these guys again. Playing in a similar sized tent, this time around it was even more packed out. No one was disappointed with the band’s 90s-grunge-style set, filled with some amazing riffs. And I’d be surprised if anyone there didn’t fall head over heels for frontwoman Romily.
Having spent the afternoon mainly getting familiar with the site, things kicked off properly for me when Slayer hit the main stage. Although slightly missing the mark – to be honest, they’d have maybe been better in a tent where they could have created a bigger atmosphere – it was certainly worth seeing these thrash metal legends at work, and definitely a good way to get in the mood for Metallica. Headlining the first night, Metallica hit the stage with everything they had, including the compulsory pyrotechnics. Living up to their 2009 headline performance, they even included by favourite ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’, which seemed to be a high point for the rest of the crowd too.
On Saturday, I found out that the best way to wake up and nurse a hangover is to go and watch Gallows perform. At first I was hesitant to see them playing on an outdoor stage, compared to watching them in the Bohemia Tent last year, but I was quickly proven wrong. Frank was completely on form and pretty much spot on with his vocals (despite rumours of problems last year) and managed to whip the crowd up into a frenzy, getting them to form a circle pit around the sound booth, which even I was tempted to join. Declaring it as one of the band’s last performances with Frank, it definitely did the band justice, with all of them as thirsty as ever throughout the performance and ending with friends and manager joining them on stage for a singalong, aw.
Next up was a trip to the smaller Jagermeister Stage to see The Virginmarys. Having already heard great things about these guys and having been gutted to miss them at Download, they totally won me over with their set. There was amazing playing, particularly from the drummer, and lead singer Ally’s vocals reminded me of a mix of Robert Plant and Wolfmother’s Andrew Stockdale.
Another highlight of the day, and probably one of my favourites of the weekend, were Weezer. The band kicked off with ‘Sweater Song’ and pretty much played a set full of their greatest numbers. They even threw in a cover of Wheatus’ ‘Teenage Dirtbag’, sounding better than the original and performed with dry humour from geekily cool Rivers, and the pinnacle of delight was another cover, of Radiohead’s ‘Paranoid Android’.
A surprising highlight of the weekend for me were Biffy Clyro on Saturday, who had the crowd sucked in from the start and definitely lived-up to their headline-status. They even had me singing along to ‘Mountains’ with true conviction.
So, final day at Sonisphere and very much partied out, I dragged myself out of my tent for Motorhead – who would want to miss out on some Lemmy action! Again, like Slayer, it was slightly flat on atmosphere, but still one not to miss. Next up were nu-metal titans Limp Bizkit. Having not being a fan until spending a lot of the weekend dancing to a friend’s boombox which was blaring out the new album and shouting “douche bag” at every opportunity (yeah that was me/us), this set totally ruled for me. They are now my favourite band that I don’t particularly like, which is probably a good thing seeing as I appeared to know a lot of the lyrics to most of their songs. But then everyone knows the words to ‘Rollin’, don’t they?!
Bill Bailey proved to be a good in-between point before Sunday’s headliners, throwing in some well-needed funniness to detract from the rain. I very much enjoyed singing along and chanting “Hey Asda, I ain’t gonna be your bitch! Good fun.
The final act of the weekend were mask-wearing heroes Slipknot. I didn’t get to see them at Reading a few years back after they pulled out, so this was one band in particular I couldn’t wait for – and even with the heavy rain nearly tipping me over the edge and sending me home, they were definitely my favourite of the weekend (or possibly joint with Weezer). The set was full of energy with a setlist covering all four albums, and ended on a rather emotional note with the band paying tribute to the late Paul Gray with an added orange jumpsuit placed on stage at the end of the set.
All in all, a definite four metal stars out of five (minus-ing one for the rain).

CYOA! Part 8: Mars
last weekend I went to the moon, next month I get to go to Mars. can't wait.
In the year 2037 NASA believes man will first step foot on Mars with the view to the planet becoming a second home for human beings 40 million miles away from planet Earth. Research suggests it might be possible to terraform the planet effectively making it a habitable climate for earthlings. Too boring. CYOA is addressing the more serious problem of what it’s going to be like to party on the red planet!
Upstairs That John Talbot will be getting the Cape Canaveral launch party started nice and early before Readers Wifes (Duckie) blast off with some Martian Music and inter-galactic sounds. The Fascination DJ’s will then take you on a tour of the international gay station and finally you will be treated to Kevy Petting’s heavy extra-terrestrial petting session.
Downstairs the FlinkMaPingo crew of SlothBoogie, Sharkleberry Fin and Lou Madhu will be throw you into a magical Martian odyssey in the search for alternative raving fuel.

KATW
oooh this arvo I am off to listen to Kurran And The Wolfnotes play some music, here's a little interview they did for us at we7:
taken from we7
Kurran And The Wolfnotes
February 2011 | Alt/Folk/Rock
Hailing from various parts of the globe, London-based four-piece Kurran And The Wolfnotes bring an unmistakable noughties twist to the alt-folk sound, with a playful hint of The Strokes complimenting their folk sensibilities.
Having already released singles "Whatabitch" and "Your Four Limbs", both via Chess Club Records, Kurran et al have just finished recording their debut album, working with producer Richard Causon (who has worked with the likes of Ryan Adams, Rufus Wainwright and Kings of Leon).
We caught up with Kurran and Tim from the band to find out more.
How did you all meet and get together as a band?
Tim: We all met through friends over the last few years. Kurran had all these songs and it all started to sound really good so it kind of just became what it is now.
How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard your music before?
Tim: It's kind of a mix of alternative surf, folk rock. Yeah, I just made that up...
Who are your influences, and do they differ within the band?
Tim: We all come from completely different musical backgrounds so we could come up with quite the list!
What have you been listening to recently?
Tim: Loads. We're constantly listening to music. Just a few though: Warpaint, Bowerbirds, Avi Buffalo, Bad Books.
You’re just finishing putting together your debut album, how was the recording process?
Kurran: Strenuous. We were never really very happy with any of our previous recordings so we decided to take a much more organic approach to recording the album. We'd play through which ever song we were going to be recording that day til about 6. By that point we'd all want to kill each other over the new alterations to the songs so we'd go out get some dinner and beers, maybe a cheeky spliff, then record the song 3 or 4 times and the best take is the record.
What can we expect from the album, does it differ from the singles you’ve put out?
It's nowhere near as polished as the singles were. We did record the singles for the album, but we're still not sure which ones will make the album.
You spent a lot of time touring last year, any favourite moments?
The whole Lightspeed Champion tour was sick.
Do you have plans to tour this year? Any festivals?
Yeah, we're going to tour around April and then we'll be playing Latitude, Beach Break and whatever else we get offered.
What are your ambitions for your music?
That it doesnt suck, anything after that is a bonus.
